Dr. Devender Sharma, also known as “Doctor Death,” has been arrested from an ashram in Dausa, Rajasthan, almost two years after escaping from prison while on parole. His arrest is a major development in one of India’s most horrifying crime cases involving serial killings and illegal kidney transplants.
A Series of Horrific Crimes
Dr. Sharma, once an Ayurvedic doctor, is accused of killing more than 50 taxi and truck drivers between 2002 and 2004 in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan. He would lure drivers with fake work offers, kill them, and throw their bodies into Hazara canal in Kasganj, which is full of crocodiles—making it hard to find any evidence.

Police say Sharma confessed to many of these killings. His crimes terrorized families and communities, and many cases remain unsolved.
Illegal Kidney Transplant Network
Sharma was also involved in a large illegal kidney transplant racket. Investigators found that between 1994 and 2004, he helped in more than 125 unauthorized kidney surgeries, charging ₹5–7 lakh per operation. He exploited poor and vulnerable people, and bribed officials to cover up his crimes.
Disguised as a Priest
After being released on parole in 2023, Sharma ran away and hid in an ashram in Rajasthan. There, he lived under the name “Sant Dayadas Maharaj”, performing religious rituals and offering healing services to visitors, all while hiding his identity.
For nearly two years, he avoided police detection until they finally tracked him down.
Arrest and Next Steps
Delhi Police’s Crime Branch, led by Deputy Commissioner Aditya Gautam, arrested Sharma in a planned operation. He is now facing serious charges including murder, illegal organ trafficking, fraud, and parole violations.
Police believe that this arrest will help solve many unsolved cases and expose the full extent of the illegal network.
Public Reaction
The news has shocked the nation. Many families of victims are relieved that Sharma has been caught but are also demanding strict punishment. Legal experts are calling for reforms to stop such crimes from happening again.
Police have promised to fully investigate the case and bring Sharma and his network to justice.
